Sleep hypnotherapy in Bath with Laura Wiltshire helps you find your way back to the rest your mind and body need.
Has bedtime lost its appeal? You know how important it is to get a good night’s rest to feel your best, to replenish your energy, to allow your body and brain to restore. But when going to bed feels like walking into a battle, it’s no wonder you don’t wake feeling refreshed.
An over active nighttime mind. The one that wakes you with a jolt, greets you with dread or anxiety, and decide that now is the perfect time to rehash everything that’s gone wrong, or should have gone differently.
It’s rarely kind, rarely helpful, and it rarely leads you back to sleep.
You might lie awake for hours, mind racing, trying to solve unsolvable problems. You may even dread bedtime altogether, knowing what lies ahead. And the harder you try to force sleep, the more it seems to slip away.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. You’re one of many “sleep theft victims” living with insomnia that seems to have no clear cause. But there is a way back.
Sleep isn’t something you make happen, it’s something your mind and body allow. When stress, anxiety, or unhelpful associations have taken hold, that natural ability to drift off peacefully can feel completely out of reach.
That’s where solution-focused hypnotherapy comes in. This gentle, science backed approach helps you calm your nervous system, and address the racing thoughts and anxiety that often sit behind insomnia and create the conditions your brain needs to rest.
Rather than focusing on the problem, we focus on what needs to change, and how you can start making those changes in a calm, manageable way. It’s about moving forward, gently and effectively.
Over time, you’ll begin to feel more confident at bedtime, trusting that sleep can come naturally again.
“The very first time i listened, I fell asleep and slept right through the night.”

Your body was never designed to fight at night, it was designed to rest. But if your brain has been stuck in survival mode, it might be acting like bedtime is the start of another shift.
This work is about helping you get back in step with your own natural sleep rhythm. You still have it, it’s just been drowned out by the noise of stress, expectation, and habit.

With consistency and the right guidance, your brain can begin to expect rest, not resistance. And when that shift happens, your whole system starts working with you again.
Sleep isn’t a passive state, it’s an active process that your brain has to feel safe enough to enter.
When your stress response is activated, your body releases cortisol, the same hormone that drives the fight-flight response. Cortisol is designed to keep you alert and ready for threat. Which is exactly why, when it remains elevated at night, your brain refuses to switch off. It’s not malfunctioning. It’s doing its job, just at entirely the wrong time.
The brain also works by pattern. Every night you lie awake, mind racing, your brain learns that this is what bedtime looks like. It builds a neural pathway, an expectation of wakefulness. Over time that pathway gets stronger, until the moment your head hits the pillow this becomes the trigger for alertness rather than rest.
This is why trying harder doesn’t work. Willpower can’t override a well worn neurological pattern.
But the brain that learned wakefulness can also learn rest. The parasympathetic nervous system, your body’s natural calm and restore mode, can be activated and strengthened. When it is, cortisol settles, the alert response quietens, and sleep becomes something your brain begins to expect again.
That’s exactly what we work together on.
The NHS recommends cognitive behavioural approaches as the first line treatment for insomnia and ongoing sleep problems, helping to change the thoughts and behaviours that keep the brain stuck in an alert, wakeful state. Solution focused hypnotherapy works with that same principle, calming the nervous system and helping your brain relearn its natural path back to rest.
Sleep difficulties don’t only show up as lying awake. For some, it’s teeth grinding, restless legs, or night terrors, all signs of a nervous system that hasn’t fully switched off.
If sleep has become something you dread, avoid, or fear, it doesn’t have to stay that way. You were designed to sleep. And with the right support, your mind and body can remember how.
Whether you’ve been struggling for months or years, this work is about gently bringing you back to your natural rhythm, helping you rest, restore, and feel more like yourself again.
If you’re ready to stop battling your own brain at bedtime, I’d love to help you find a new way forward.
Let’s make sleep something you look forward to again.
